One of my favorite Store-Bought Pies: Refletes du France – Gâteau breton à la crème de pruneaux

Refletes du France is in fact one of my favorite food brands. I could probably eat and enjoy 90% of their products. They have 438 products and each one of them is made from a traditional french recipe and they use high quality ingredients.

Unfortunately, in my country there is available only a limited range of products. But, among this teeny-tiny range, I discovered what became my favorite pie. Yup, favorite pie.

The product is kind of funny since it comes cut in half (probably they cut it so you could see the prune cream inside).

It is called Gâteau breton à la crème de pruneaux, meaning “Breton cake with prune cream”. I wouldn’t say it is a cake, it is rather a pie-cake. They used the classic breton cake recipe and added in the middle a delicious prune cream. The pastry has the classic Breton buttery taste which always goes amazing with unsweetened tea (I also like Breton butter biscuits with tea).

Apart from its really good taste, I like the healthy ingredients. Don’t get too excited, it is not a Bio-pie, it does have some chemicals, but you won’t see palm oil or some other spooky ingredients. In fact, here is the entire list:

  • Wheat flour,
  • prune cream 25% (prune pulp 20%, sugar, water, preservative: sorbic acid),
  • sugar,
  • concentrated butter 18% (ie 22% reconstituted butter),
  • fresh eggs,
  • fresh egg yolks,
  • baking powders: diphosphates and sodium carbonates (contains wheat),
  • salt.

With tea, this prune pie makes me go … nom nom nom.

Which reminds me about my all-time favorite: Whaou crepes.
