Let Monstober Begin Wish Some Great Movies!

The summer heat is finally gone for good!

We can officially chill, put on a blanket, read a book…

Besides, Monstober is here and it is spooky and scaaaaary! And FUN 😀 😀 😀

The thing I like about Monstober is that I get to watch almost every day one of my favorite movies. Usually these movies are on TV, so it is very nice to follow the October’s TV program. Here is a list with my Monstober movies:

1. Beetlejuice (1988)

Ever since I was a child I have been in love with this movie. Geena Davis looked great, Tim Burton was only 30 y.o., people were more relaxed back then… even more creative and funny I would say.

The movie is great and all, Tim Burton did a wonderful job and I loved him even before knowing about him, but what I really think fascinated me as a child in this movie is Winona Ryder’s character.

She was only 16 y.o., but she was amazing. She played her role so smooth and nice.

I liked the fact that the character changed a lot of clothes and it really built this fashionable goth girl. There is a lot of diversity with her clothes in the movie and it really shows the director’s solicitude in creating this movie.

The character (Lydia) was both funny and dark, fresh and goth… It was perfect!

The whole movie was perfect. If you haven’t seen it yet, go watch it. It is really amazing! Sorry for so many GIFs with Winona, but I absolutely adore this movie!

2. The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993)

Another movie “crush” of my childhood… This particular Addams series. A lot of people prefer other Addams movies, but I definitely love these ones. And the Addams Family Values (1993), which is a sequel, is just as good, and maybe even better, than the first one. I absolutely love them both.

Why do I love these Addams Family movies so much? Well…

Raul Julia… 😍

Anjelica Huston… 😍

Christina Ricci… 😍

Of course, the movies are very funny in a very special way.

I am very tempted to post tons of GIFs just like I did with the previous movie, but I will spare your eyes and let you discover by yourselves these wonderful movies and their funny gigs 😀

3.  Johnny Depp’s Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Well, needless to say Johnny’s another of my childhood crushes… 😀

Sleepy Hollow is the perfect spooky movie for Halloween and (not surprisingly) is also directed by Tim Burton. 11 years difference between Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow, zero difference in my pleasure of watching them.

Unlike the previous 2 movies, Sleepy Hollow is more romantic. It is darker, but still funny, and very sensual.

In fact, this movie is a kind of cast reunion between the previous 2 movies, because it is directed by Tim Burton and the female protagonist is portrayed by Christina Ricci.

Other 2 of my favorite actors play in this movie: Miranda Richardson and Christopher Walken  😍.

There is also the Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) – Tim Burton and Johnny Depp again, and Helena Bonham Carter who is, yet another, childhood favorite actors. I don’t know why, but I never really liked this movie, although it is very neatly realized. Maybe it is to psycho for my taste…

Anyhow, there is also The Ninth Gate (1999) – Johnny Depp again, but this time directed by Roman Polanski. This is definitely one of my favorite movies, but I don’t necessarily recommend it for Halloween (even though there are demons and magic stuff). But since it is so good, I had to make mention of it. It is really a remarkable movie (and a little bit underrated). Maybe I’ll write about it some other time.

4. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

In the good tradition of watching tons of movies with the same favorite actors, here is another great Halloween movie:  Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) with no other than Winona Ryder, accompanied by Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins AND Keanu Reeves. What else could you ask from a casting?!  😍

All the actors are absolutely astonishing, but Gary Oldman is incredibly sexy in some scenes… especially in his scenes with Winona who, at the time, was 21 y.o., while Gary was 34…

I think this is the first movie in my list that isn’t actually a comedy (although it has its funny parts).

This is not your average Hollywood movie. It has aesthetically beautiful images, it is very “arty” and sensual and romantic and sexy… There are some incredible hot scenes… but I’m not saying anything more, I will let you discover them by yourselves if you haven’t done it already.

I also liked the fact that the characters are portrayed in various clothes and styles, which makes the film even more interesting.

Surprisingly, the movie has a pretty good rating on IMDB (7.5). I am glad it is not an underrated movie and people did appreciate it.

5. Honorable mentions

There are many other movies that I absolutely love to watch for Halloween, but I obviously cannot list them all. Still, I will try to list some “honorable mentions” that I think deserve their place in a good Halloween movie list:

Hocus Pocus (1993)

A comedy with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy as 3 funny and mean witches. It isn’t really great as a movie, but it has its funny parts and it is literally about Halloween.

Merlin (TV Mini-Series 1998)

This is a 2 parts movie created by Hallmark. It is really catchy and fun, relaxing, engaging and interesting to watch. The cast is also really good: Helena Bonham Carter (strikes again in my movie list 🙂 ), Rutger Hauer, Miranda Richardson (again), Isabella Rossellini,  Sam Neill.

What I liked most about this movie was Miranda Richardson’s character, Queen Mab. I always adored her!

Constantine (2005)

Keanu Reeves again 🙂

What can I say about this movie… it is so interesting, funny, well made, that it is good all year round. I don’t know if it is really a “Halloween” movie just because it involves hell and demons, but it is definitely a good watch.

The Craft (1996)

I always liked this movie, it is something about it… something catchy… Beautiful girls, mean girls, fashion, music, highschool, witchcraft… perfect 90s movie recipe. Anyhow, The Craft stands out with one of the most epic goth characters all time: Nancy Downs (portrayed by Fairuza Balk). She was really something…

Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)

This dark Lolita story is even more interesting than the original Lolita one. Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Antonio Banderas around the 12 y.o.  Kirsten Dunst… Sensual, interesting, exciting, dark, mysterious, elegant… Not to mention the Heathers (1988) protagonist – Christian Slater. So many great actors, such a good story… Great movie!

Sin City (2005) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)

These are genuinely the only 2 modern movies that are filmes in black and white with very few color insertions that I actually not liked, but loved! I think everyone should see these movies because they are not regular movies, they are so special and different that you can’t actually miss something like this, even if it is not your taste. Why are they Halloween movies? I would say because they are a little bit horror, a little bit thriller, more action, even more erotism and a lot of silliness, but in a good way. Also, you will get to see Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba and Eva Green.

Queen of the Damned (2002)

This is a very, very silly movie, but it is definitely a nice watch for Halloween, eve if it is with vampires and not witches. The movie has so much music that it is almost a musical, but the music is nice, silly rock as well. Also, there are tons of interesting costumes and makeup, so even though it is not one of the best movies you’ll ever watch, you will definitely not waste 2 hours watching it. It will be fun 🙂

Spirited Away (2001)

The only cartoon in my list (I purposdly missed movies like Monsters Inc. or Caspar because I don’t particularly like them). Well, Spirited Away is a very special movie, one of my all time favorites. It has Japanese myths, ghosts, spirits, a funny girl, a romantic relationship, an adventure… Very special, indeed. I don’t know if it is actually a Halloween movie, first time I saw it in spring and I instantly fell in love with it. But since it involves so many spirits, I guess it is also a Halloween movie.

Bonus: Mean Girls (2004)

And last, but not the least, there is this Halloween scene in Mean Girls (I wrote a complete Mean Girls review here) so good that even the movie has nothing to do with Halloween, it is still a good Halloween watch. Even though the Halloween scene is short (10 minutes max) it has so many funny and great little scenes. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about if you’ve already seen this movie, and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?!

Soooo, phew, we’re finally over. This is only a small list of my favorite Monstober movies :). What are yours?

Hope you liked this post. I surely loved writing it!

Let Monstober Begin! Muhahaha 😀
